When the pandemic hit in 2020, La Casa Founders Holding Company purchased the building at auction. Our nonprofit organization partnered with the new ownership to reopen its doors to the community. Soon after, the building received official landmark designation, restoring its historical name: La Casa de la Raza. Today, the Restorative Justice Education Center continues to serve from this iconic space — supporting families in crisis, uplifting community voices, and keeping the doors open while the building undergoes its final transformation.
Rebuilding Casa:
In 2020, our team moved into Casa de la Raza, stepping into a space rich with history and deep roots in the immigrant justice movement. What we found was a beloved community hub in urgent need of care—collapsed roof sections, rotting floorboards, mold, and safety concerns kept it from serving its people as it once had. With determination and love, we began the work of restoration: rebuilding floorboards, repairing the roof, removing hazards, and fundraising to ensure every repair was done with dignity. This has been a labor of love—restoring for our community, by our community—so that Casa can once again serve its purpose for generations to come. Today, thanks to the hands and hearts of so many, Casa is being returned to its original role as a safe, vibrant gathering place where immigrant families, organizers, and neighbors can connect, organize, and build a more just future together.
This restoration is more than just repairing a building—it’s reclaiming a piece of our shared history. Casa de la Raza has been a safe haven, a cultural landmark, and a voice for justice for over 50 years. By restoring it together, we’re preserving a space where our children and future generations can learn, organize, and celebrate their heritage without fear. Every nail hammered, every wall repaired, and every dollar raised is a testament to the power of community taking care of its own.
